EUR/USD at 1.1096. Oil below $50. US initial claims rose to 268,000.

EUR/USD slightly declined today. As of 6:00 PM EDT the currency pair was trading at 1.1096, which is 0.25% lower than the previous close.

Global shares were mostly up today. While the Asian shares rose only slightly, the European and US   shares climbed more than 1%. Below is presented the performance of major indices:

  • FTSE 100 closed at 6,504.33, up 2.27%.
  • CAC 40 rose 1.00% finishing at 4,237.48.
  • Euro Stoxx 50 closed at 2,864.74, which is 1.15% higher than the previous close.
  • DJIA increased 1.33% finishing at 17,929.99.
  • Nasdaq Composite finished at 4,842.67, up 1.33%.
  • S&P 500 closed at 2,098.86, which represents 1.36% gain from the previous close.

According to the report from the trade ministry, Japan’s industrial production declined 2.3% in May from a month earlier, way more than the 0.2% expected by the economists.

The British economy grew 0.4% during the first quarter of 2016, as reported by the Office of National Statistics. GDP per capita increased 0.3% over the same period.

The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits increased last week. According to the data from the Labor Department, initial claims for state unemployment benefits rose 10,000 to a seasonally adjusted 268,000 for the week ended June 25, which is slightly higher than the 267,000 figure estimated by the analysts. Claims have now been below 300,000 threshold level for 69 consecutive weeks, which represents the longest streak since 1973.


Oil prices fell today. The WTI Crude closed at 49.40 USD/bbl, down 2.97%. The Brent Crude was trading at 49.68 USD/bbl as of 2:30 PM EDT, which is 1.84% lower than the previous close.
